The Welfare Council, in collaboration with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), organises the ‘Love. Innovate for Happy Ageing’ competition. This initiative encourages students to apply their STEM knowledge to design ‘Gerontech’ solutions for the elderly. Since its inception in 2019, the programme has nurtured approximately 2,000 young talents.
Now entering its sixth edition, the event is co-organised by the Welfare Council, the Department of Biomedical Engineering at PolyU, the Tencent Foundation, and the Tencent WeTech Academy. It has been officially titled the Tencent STEAM for Good ‘Love. Innovate for Happy Ageing’ competition.
A distinctive feature of the competition is the inclusion of ‘Gerontech Testers’. Recruited from the Council’s District Elderly Community Centres and trained through workshops, these seniors provide young designers with invaluable feedback from a user’s perspective.
